Nothing is worse than wanting to capture a memory in the moment only to find that your phone has reached max capacity. Most smartphones nowadays (besides iPhones) have the option to extend the standard memory with a microSD card slot.

So which memory card is best for your phone? Well it’s subjective. Firstly you want to take a look at the read/write speeds. The higher these numbers, the more efficient saving data such as photos and apps will be. Most cards these days are well within budget and come with pretty high read/write speeds but you should be looking at buying one no slower than 80mb/s.

You also want to take into account capacity (duh), class and UHS-I ratings (more on that here).

With that said, here are our top picks to make sure you’re getting the most out of your smartphones.

  1. Could you please include random write speeds for small (4kb) files and also large files (which I understand is more important for phone/tablet use where various tasks are asked of the device) and sequential write speeds (which I understand is more important for camera/video use where the device is only being asked to do the same thing one time after another) on all the sd and micro sd cards? It makes it impossible to compare the actual value for money without this information (which I suspect is why the actual manufacturers often don’t include it and make it incredibly hard to find anything), but as the retailer, it would be most beneficial to you and also to us as the purchaser as then it explains price differences between products when all else appears equal. In this article you haven’t given any random write information at all, so it would be most useful if you could please update your article with this – thank you. Additionally I understand that the Evo “+” vs Evo “Plus” while looking the same actually function slightly differently with impacts on some speeds? I’m sure I read somewhere that the 64GB Evo Plus/+ (?) U1 card actually had higher random write speeds than the 64GB Evo Plus U3 card as well, which meant the older card was better for tablets/phones while the newer is better for cameras/camcorders? I’d really love to see an article which explains all the differences and provides links to some reputable websites where tests of the various speeds are shown. It has been very hard to find any information on this. Thank you in advance. (PS, MyMemory has been excellent with all products I have purchased, and all communications I have ever hard with them.)

  2. Noted, thanks Tessa
Indeed, some brands tend not to give out specific read/write speeds, but you can get an idea of the minimum speed of the card by what class it is. We have a short info post about card speed classes here: https://www.mymemory.co.uk/blog/speed-class-speed-performance-sdcards/

Thanks again Tessa, we’ll try to update or add some more information for a future article about random write speeds for smaller files and the differences.

    Have a great day!
