Canon has entered the full-frame mirrorless camera market, joining competitors Sony, Fujifilm and Nikon. The company revealed a new mirrorless digital camera and lens mount system at an unveiling event in Tokyo on Wednesday 5th September.

The announcement of the EOS R comes just shortly after rival Nikon uncovered its first full-frame mirrorless camera – the Z series.

With an ISO range of 100-40,000, Canon’s EOS R digital camera is constructed around a 30.3-megapixel full frame sensor and Digic 8 image processor for 8 frames per second continuous shooting. Additionally, the camera features a Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus which gives an extraordinary 5,655 selectable AF points. Canon boasts that it has the fastest autofocus capabilities in the world, reaching 0.05 seconds when paired with an RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens.

“There has never been a time in history in which visual expression has been so prolific,” states Canon’s Kazuto Ogawa.

Canon has introduced a new feature with the EOS R camera – a new multi-function control panel with a fully connected 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen. By tapping and sliding your finger across the panel, users can check customizable settings like autofocus, ISO and white balance, quickly and easily.

In combination with the announcement of Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera, the camera giant has revealed that there will be four initial RF lenses launched with the EOS R.
