What is a dash cam?
As the name suggests, a dash cam is a dashboard-mounted camera that records the road ahead, often incorporating an LCD screen to show you what’s being recorded. Some dash cam kits include both front and rear-facing cameras for a full view of the road.
Dash cams can be mounted to your vehicle in numerous ways - either using a dedicated bracket, a sticky pad or a suction cup. They are connected to the car’s electrical system via the cigarette lighter socket or through hard-wiring.
The popularity of dash cams has increased significantly in recent years, with research from Aviva Insurance revealing that more than a quarter of motorists currently use one. Furthermore, 72% of motorists believe that they should be compulsory for all drivers, while 36% say they feel safer on the road when using a dash cam.
Can a dash cam reduce your car insurance?
A third of drivers with dash cams who have been involved in an accident were able to successfully prove they were not responsible as a result of the dashboard-mounted technology. With dash cam footage now routinely used by both the police and UK courts, insurance providers have been forced to sit up and take notice. As such, many now offer discounted premiums to motorists who agree to fit a dash cam in their car.
While terms and conditions vary from one insurer to another, there are some common stipulations. Many insurers demand that your dash camera be permanently fitted so that it records every journey you undertake. As such, they generally won’t accept footage recorded on a smartphone, even if you have downloaded a dedicated dash cam app. Contact your insurance provider for more information.
