Microsoft Surface Phone: The Worlds Most Elusive Smart Phone

Microsoft Surface Phone Concept

Initially announced back in 2012, the Microsoft Surface Phone has been stuff of legends to this very day. You’d be forgiven for thinking that, but now, (more) rumours have started to surface that this phone IS in development and will be out soon eventually.

Microsoft’s CEO has declared that 2017 would see them launch the ultimate mobile device.

“We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today’s market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device.”

We still don’t know a huge amount about the Microsoft Surface Phone, but below are some of the leaks and rumours that have got us excited to see what Microsoft have up their sleeve and how they will compete with the ever changing smart phone market.

So why get excited about the Microsoft Surface Phone?

Changing the way that the market looks at a device is a key feature of the modern Surface line-up. From the easel-like Surface Studio and the exquisite Surface Book, to the Surface Pro and new Surface Laptop machines, Microsoft has taken a basic design pattern and reimagined what can be achieved with a new approach.

Microsoft Surface Phone screen

Latest leaks:

  • A 5.5-inch QHD screen
  • ClearBlack AMOLED technology

Most rumors so far suggest the Surface Phone will house a 5.5-inch display, and the resolution could be an impressive 1440 x 2560 – though that leak came in 2015, so it’s well past its expiry date.

There were rumours that it would have a ClearBlack* AMOLED display, but that rumour is also well past its expiry date as it came to light around the same time.

*ClearBlack is a technology which reduces reflections, and has been used on some Lumia phones, while AMOLED is most famously used by Samsung, but has also appeared on Windows handsets. It typically presents vivid colours with great contrast and deep blacks

Microsoft Surface Phone camera and battery

Latest leaks:

  • An impressive 21MP rear camera
  • 8MP front facing camera
  • Very fast and wireless charging

These speak for themselves really. Having a 21MP rear camera tends to align with the smartphones out at the moment, so that’s probably true, as well as an 8MP front facing camera, which seems about right.

Rumours surrounding battery is that the Surface Phone will use a Snapdragon 835 chip, which supports Quick Charge 4.0, as well as supporting wireless charging. All seems relatively plausible and legit.

Microsoft Surface Phone OS and power

Latest leaks:

  • A Snapdragon 835 and 6GB of RAM
  • Up to 128GB of storage
  • Impressive multi-tasking skills

Obviously, the Surface Phone us bound to run Windows 10 Mobile. This means that it will most likely run desktop apps through Microsoft’s Continuum software (a feature that allows you to connect a phone to a display and use it like a computer). That’s some serious power right there.

There are also talks of 3 alternative models, a consumer model, a business model and a pro model.

Microsoft Surface Phone other features

Latest leaks:

  • A keyboard and stylus
  • A built in fingerprint scanner in the display
  • A Projector

Now, take all of this with a pinch of salt. We’re still not wholly convinced this phone even exists! Launch dates have come and gone, no official announcements have been made and the end of 2017 is getting closer and closer.

However, if what has been rumoured and leaked turn out to be true, then we have a strong contender on our hands for the “Worlds Best Smart Phone”…

… But then again, probably not!

Coming soon?
