Guest contributor Ian Lewis takes a look at how the world of graphic design has changed since the start of photoshop.
Before Photoshop, companies had to outsource in order to get the images they wanted for their own purposes. That used to cost enormous amounts of money and it took longer for things to be made. Luckily, with technology advancing and with the “birth” of Photoshop, the world of graphic designed changed. In the beginning, 28 years ago, the change was slow until Photoshop was perfected and many people learned how to use the technology. Fast forward to today, this program has an enormous impact. With its latest version, you are offered dozens of useful tools for graphic design and it’s no wonder every other company or individual uses Photoshop. Within this article, we take a look at what has changed since it’s arrival:
Access to publishing
Before Photoshop, digital image used to be very expensive and companies had to rely on outsourcing to get them. However, as soon as Photoshop was released, all that became much less of a trouble and it certainly cost less. It helped people get a similar type of design which can easily be published on laptops. This was not accessible back in the day, and it certainly wasn’t affordable.
The photo industry
Without Photoshop, people had to rely on expensive and heavy machinery in order to edit a digital photo. Also, they needed to have skilful production staff, which together, cost a lot of money. With the introduction of this useful program, all that workload, limitations, and expenses were lifted, and it certainly brought plenty of significant changes in photography. Not to mention how there are new resources for Photoshop emerging every day, making photo manipulation much easier and faster to do. One such example is a Lightroom and Photoshop resource Sleek Lens, with which you can easily edit photos and ultimately, do it fast.
Our perception of images
When you see a really good image that might even seem impossible to you, you would probably just say “Wow!”. However, with Photoshop on the table, you might question the validity of such an image. Your first words today might be “Must’ve been photoshopped!”, which is not always a good thing. When it comes to advertising, Photoshop brings many benefits, since you can create designs and images that can really catch someone’s attention.
But, when it comes to body image, for example, Photoshop might be causing some problems. Many people on social media use this program to make themselves look better. This is something big companies also do with their models, and that is causing problems with people and a false sense of body image. However, when used correctly, graphics can be made beautiful and worth seeing with Photoshop, you just have to be careful.
Back in the day, every image a company needed for advertising was made by hand. Today, Photoshop has reduced all that work and hassle because it offers various tools that make everything much easier for advertisers. With it, they can create strong and competitive content for all kinds of marketing, including content marketing, email marketing, social media marketing, and many other campaigns.
Trends of social media
It is not only marketing that Photoshop has changed through graphic design, but it has also altered entertainment on social media and its trends. With it, we now have viral content, such as memes and all kinds of entertainment media. There are even websites dedicated to Photoshop fails, disasters and successes, and it has certainly become an integral part of today’s pop culture, which leaves plenty of space for creative graphic designs.
Various technological advances have changed each and every career in this world. However, Photoshop has made a great impact on the graphic design industry and for the better. You don’t have to wait for days to edit an image or create your own unique design, for whatever purpose. With Photoshop, everything can be done within minutes. Plus, many other technological advances made it easier to use such tools, to transfer data quickly and to access all kinds of media from phones and computers. So, it is safe to say that things have got a lot easier and faster.
The film industry
We all know how movies today use plenty of different technologies for the designs and special effects, and we all have Photoshop to thank for that. The film industry was even the first one to adopt photoshop and that has brought many successes, such as the Star Wars episodes.
It is safe to say that Photoshop has brought many benefits to society. The editing software had made a significant impact on the world of graphic design. What is more, knowing how to work in Photoshop has become a very desirable skill that many people possess and that is why we have such great marketing campaigns and humorous online entertainment.
