Toshiba reveals write once SD card28 April 2011 17:05:16
A new write once SD card has been unveiled by Toshiba, believed to be the first of its kind.
As seen with non-rewritable CDs and DVDs, users of the SD card cannot delete or overwrite data once it has been saved.
Wired.com reports that Toshiba is aiming the memory card at governments, police and other organisations that need to record data that cannot be tampered with, such as evidence photos.
However, the card is so far only available in Japan and comes with a storage capacity of just 1GB.
Ubergizmo.com speculates that, as the card's capacity at so low, Toshiba is probably testing the market to see how well the cards will do before creating different models and selling them elsewhere.
Toshiba announced earlier this month that it is also to enter the tablet PC market with a model which will be compatible with SD memory cards.
The tablet PC, which is based on the Android 3.0 operating system, is due to be released in Japan this June, followed by global markets shortly after, reports IDG News.
Kingmax unveils waterproof SDXC card28 April 2011 12:42:24
Memory card maker Kingmax has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s first waterproof high-capacity, high-speed SDXC card.
The new memory card can store up to 64GB of data and comes with a top Class 10 speed rating.
This means that it can reach a read speed of up to 65 MB/s and a write speed of 40 MB/s.
As well as being waterproof, the new SDXC card is also fully dustproof, making it ideal for photographers taking photos in difficult conditions.
It uses the ExFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) file system which makes it ideal for storing DVD image files, HD films and any virtual machine hard-drive files over 4GB.
This also allows for more free space after fragmentation and better utilisation of free-space allocation, says Kingmax.
Earlier this month, Toshiba unveiled a new waterproof camcorder, compatible with SD, SDHC and SDXC cards of up to 64GB in capacity.
