Sony launches Vita in Japan20 December 2011 17:04:53
Sony's new portable gaming system the Vita has been launched in Japan.
Japanese market research company Famitsu stated that the device has sold 321,407 units in its first two days, meaning it is more popular than its PSP predecessor, but failed to sell more units than Nintendo's 3DS, which shifted nearly 50,000 more.
The analyst believes first week sales will hit 1.4 million.
However, the BBC reports the launch has been hampered by reports of faulty units, with many Japanese consumers finding they were faced with unresponsive touchscreens and devices that were prone to freezes and crashes.
The situation led Sony to issue a statement on its website.
"Currently, our information centre regarding PlayStation Vita as well as our usual customer service centre are receiving many enquiries. We apologise if your phone isn't connected straight away," it read.
The manufacturer added that many of the problems could be solved by simple procedures that would not require the Vita handsets to be returned.
